Die Apocalypse ist nah!

Es ist bekannt, dass es viele religioese Christen in USA gibt.  Und zwar von der sehr fundamentalistischen Sorte.
Von ausserhalb ist das leicht unterschaetzt.  Ich glaube auch, dass es in den Demokratisch-waehlenden Staaten leicht zu unterschaetzen ist (Sonntags morgens ist auch hier allerdings das Fernsehen voll von Predigern der of uebelen Sorte; und dann war da das Flugblatt "Earthquake" von Tony Alamo).
Schon vor Jahren hatte der Economist von der Buch Serie "Left Behind" geschrieben.  Damals waren, wenn ich micht recht erinnere, 40 millionen der ersten sieben Buecher verkauft.  Vom ersten Buch waren 10 Millionen verkauft worden.  Inzwischen sind wohl 63 Millionen "Left Behind" Buecher verkauft worden.
Und jetzt, vor allem in der Weihnachtszeit, gibt es auch das Videospiel.  Das ganze wird auch in den "linken Medien" angepriesen.  Im Fernsehen, im "linken" Kalifornien.

Wie schlimm ist die Serie?  Spencer Ackerman, frueherer Herausgeber von The New Republic (fuer die er viel zu realitaetsbezogen im Bezug zum Irak-Krieg war), hat gerade darueber gepostet:

Left Behind is a despicable revenge fantasy perpetrated with a malicious heart by the sort of vile believer who sees only impurity around him. It hinders his ascension, and he must have satisfaction. So many so-called Christians are left behind after the rapture, and the sneering attitude by LaHaye and Jenkins informs you that they told you so.

The novel's enemies are familiar. Perfidious Europe. The secular and venal national media. The United Nations. The Jew. There's even Catholic-bashing of the ancient vintage: the unraptured President of the United States is an earthy lout named Gerry "Fitz" Fitzhugh. The Jew is my favorite enemy, of course. Israeli Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig creates a formula to make the desert bloom (thanks for that Ben-Gurion reference, assholes) and uses his resulting prestige to usher the Antichrist onto the world stage.

Und eben genau das, was die Amis ernst nehmen: Die UN wird zur Welt-Regierung und zieht um nach Baghdad (vorm Krieg).  Hat alles biblische Bedeutung.  Amy Sullivan hat 2004 auch mal darueber geschrieben:

In this particular imagining of Revelations, the Anti-Christ isn't just any world leader, but the Secretary General of the United Nations (a title he changes to "Global Community Supreme Potentate"). And his nefarious plans to take over the earth include the standardization of the world's currencies and languages, global disarmament (requiring our heroes to stockpile weapons, militia-like, in order to stand up to Satanic forces), and a peace treaty in the Middle East. Throughout the series, journalists and academics--two prime conservative targets--come in for a special beating, their skepticism and intellectualism being the main obstacles, after all, to truly embracing Christian belief.

What is unbelievable is the premise that the Ted Koppels of the world would set aside their skepticism and fall all over themselves to praise the Anti-Christ (known in the series as Nicolae Carpathia, a Romanian businessman), swooning over his dazzling ability to name every country in the world. Or that the Anti-Christ could just up and relocate the United Nations to Babylon (modern-day Iraq), without so much as a peep of dissent from any world leader. And when, after 12 books, the second coming, Armageddon, and the Judgment of Satan, all of the saints from throughout history return to earth and Jesus's thousand-year rule begins, the series ends thus: "As Buck and Chloe continued to interact with Irene and Amanda, Rayford borrowed Raymie. 'There are so many people I want to see, Son. You must meet them all. And we've only got a thousand years.'"

Und der Slactivist hat mehr.

Warum ist das so signifikant?  Weil die Amis die den Dreck lesen und glauben die Republikaner und den Irak-Krieg unterstuetzen.  Dabei ist ganz offensichtlich, dass Bush ein falscher Prophet ist, und das daher diese Leute nicht bei der "Rapture" (das juengste Gericht) verschwinden.  Vielleicht sind sie auch unschuldig, aber auch Gott wird irgendwann Nachlaessigkeit nicht von Bosartigkeit unterscheiden koennen.  Und diese Wut gegen das weltliche ist auch sehr christlich?
